Etymology[edit]

Compound of point (period) +‎ barre (bar) On the model of French point final, an allusion to a typewriter or computer keyboard, the period being followed by a space.

Alternatively, some place the expression's origin as referring to a period following a slash, used for marking the end of a message transmitted by telex.
