Italian[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Latin prōferre (“to bring out, bring forth”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Verb[edit]
proferìre (first-person singular present proferìsco, first-person singular past historic proferìi, past participle proferìto, auxiliary avére)
- (transitive) to utter, to pronounce, to express (words, a judgment, a condemnation, etc.)
- (transitive) to offer, to propose
- Synonym: (more common in this sense) profferire
Usage notes[edit]
- Irregular forms such as past historic proffèrsi and past participle proffèrto are common especially in the meaning "to offer, to propose". Properly these come from the variant form profferire.
