Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German prophēzīen, derived from prophēzīe, a byform of prophētīe (see Prophetie). The z-form was influenced by Old French profecie. The verb itself may also follow Old French profecier (whence at any rate Middle High German prophēzieren).
