Inherited from Chagatai قلای (qalay, how). Related to Karachay-Balkar къалай (qalay), Kyrgyz кандай (kanday), Kazakh қалай (qalai), Uyghur قانداق (qandaq), Tuvan кандыг (kandıg), and Yakut хайдах (qaydaq).

Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ka- (interrogative stem) +‎ *-lig (adjectival suffix)
