Etymology[edit]

With dissimilation from Arabic قَلْقَلَ (qalqala, to move, stir).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

qanqal (imperfect jqanqal, past participle mqanqal, verbal noun tqanqil)

  1. to stir, excite, agitate
    • “Rajt, ma rajtx”‎[1]performed by Tony Camilleri:
Fuq it-triq ta’ Birkirkara int u sejjer San Ġiljan,
Hemm salib fuq il-kolonna, musbieħ jixgħel lejl u nhar.
Das-salib, jekk darba tħares lejh, iqanqallek kurżità.
      Għandu storja jrid jirrakkontaha,
Iżda jgħidha ma jistax, għax sieket.
In Birkirkara when you take the road to San Ġiljan,
There’s a cross on a column with a lamp shining day and night.
If you ever look at that cross, it’ll stir your curiosity.
It has a story that it wants to tell,
But it can’t say it because it’s mute.
