Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Shortening of *qiftër, from Byzantine Greek ξιφτέρι, ἐξιφτέριν (xiphtéri, exiphtérin), from Latin accipiter (hawk).[1] According to Orel, borrowed directly from Latin accipiter (vulture), for the loss of the last syllable see mbret.[2]
