Etymology

From the placenames, which are named for the tribe; the tribe's name is an Anglicization of their autonym, and the word is thus ultimately from Malecite-Passamaquoddy.

1. (US, dialectal, very rare) Herring, especially if caught and cured (or smoked) near any of the various northeastern American places named Quoddy or Passamquoddy.
