Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *k-riɛs (PPC *k-riɛs/k-rɛs, PMV *res), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ris ~ *riəs ~ *rəs ~ *rʔiəs (root). Cognate with North Central Vietnamese rện, Semai re'iis, Bahnar rơh, Koho rias, Pacoh reaih, Khmer ឫស (rɨh), Mon ရိုဟ် and Car Nicobarese rĕh, Santali ᱨᱮᱦᱮᱫ (rehet’).
