rainband (plural rainbands)

  1. A dark band in the yellow portion of the solar spectrum near the sodium line, caused by the presence of water vapour in the atmosphere, and hence sometimes used in weather predictions.
  2. (meteorology) An elongated cloud and precipitation structure associated with an area of rainfall.
    1. The spiralling bands of cloud and precipitation that make up the bulk of most tropical cyclones.
