Borrowed from (c. 16th-18th century) Early Modern Spanish reloj (clock, watch, timepiece). In Early Modern Spanish, Spanish ⟨j⟩ was pronounced /ʃ/; /ʃ/ became /s/ as common with other early borrowings (compare sabon, singkamas, sugal, saro, and tasa). Doublet of relo.
