Perhaps representing a variant or derivative of unrecorded *remman (compare Old English fremian ~ fremman), from Proto-West Germanic *rammijan, from Proto-Germanic *rammijaną (to make strong), cognate with Old Norse remma (to make strong, bind up); or related to Old Frisian remia, ramia (to build up, erect), from Proto-West Germanic *hramu (frame, framework).
