Etymology[edit]

From roeg (bird) + a morpheme from Proto-Tai *ʔeːnᴮ (swallow). The second component is cognate with Thai แอ่น (ɛ̀n), Lao ແອ່ນ (ʼǣn), Shan ဢႅၼ်ႇ (ʼèn); also compare Middle Chinese (MC 'enH, “swallow”).
