From Proto-Micronesian *roŋo, from Proto-Oceanic *roŋoʀ, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dəŋəʀ, from Proto-Austronesian *dəŋəʀ. Cognate with Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig, dingig, Maori rongo, Fijian rogo.
