Etymology[edit]
From Old Irish síl (“seed”),[1] from Proto-Celtic *sīlom (compare Welsh hil), from Proto-Indo-European *seh₁- (“to sow”) (compare Latin sēmen (“seed”), Old English sāwan (“to sow”)).
The verb is from Old Irish sílaid.[2]
