From Proto-Baltic *sek-, *sak-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sákīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *sekʷ- (to say).

Cognate to Latvian sacīt, Russian сочить (sočitʹ, to emit (a liquid)), German sagen (to say), English say and Latin inquam (to say). Compare sekti (to follow) from e-grade *sekʷ- (to follow).
