Etymology[edit]

17th century, from Hebrew שָׁחַט (šāḥaṭ). The umlaut possibly spread from the derivative Schächter (Jewish butcher), where it may have sprung from analogy with unrelated Schlächter (butcher), but a verb form with -a- seems unattested.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈʃɛçtən/
  • Hyphenation: schäch‧ten
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

schächten (weak, third-person singular present schächtet, past tense schächtete, past participle geschächtet, auxiliary haben)

  1. (chiefly Judaism, Islam) to slaughter by bleeding out
