Inherited from Vulgar Latin *excurtus, from Latin curtus (short); the initial s- may also have been added later in Romanian, or appeared as a result of the influence of scurta, from excurtare. Compare also Aromanian shcurtu. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker-.
