Compound of sekolah (school) +‎ lanjutan (advanced, continuation), from calque of Dutch of school voor voortgezet onderwijs: school (school) + voor (for) + voortgezet onderwijs (secondary education, literally continuing education), or meer uitgebreid lager onderwijs (MULO): meer (more) + uitgebreid (extensive) + lager (low) + onderwijs (school). Replaced by sekolah menengah.
