Etymology[edit]
Compound of sekolah menengah (“high school (US), secondary school (UK)”) + pertama (“first”) from either
- Calque of Japanese 初等 (shotō, “beginner, primary”) + 中学校 (chūgakkō, “secondary (middle) school”). The post-war Japanese term is 中学校 (chūgakkō), or
- Calque of Chinese 初級中學/初级中学 (chūjí zhōngxué, “junior middle school”).
