Etymology[edit]

From Japanese 審判部長 (shinpan buchō, しんぱんぶちょう), from Middle Chinese 審判 (ʃim-pʰàn "to judge", "to try") (compare Mandarin shěnpàn 审判) + 部長 (búw-ʈjáng "department leader") (compare Mandarin bùzhǎng 部长).
