Etymology[edit]

Unclear. Either from the same root as Ancient Greek σκορπίος (skorpíos), Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker-, or from shkrep, since scorpions are usually found on rocks. Alternatively a borrowing from Latin scorpiō.
