English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the smaller size of the engine block assembly compared to a long block.

Noun[edit]

short block (plural short blocks)

  1. (automotive) An engine subassembly comprising the portion of the cylinder block below the cylinder head gasket but above the oil pan (and including neither).

Usage notes[edit]

Not the same as small block, which refers to the physical size of an engine rather than the completeness of the subassembly.
