Etymology[edit]

  • Orel propeses a borrowing from Latin subjugāre, with the loss of two intervocalic voiced stops.[1]
  • Possibly a derivative of shuj (to be silent, to hush), thus originally meaning to 'bring to silence, to suppress', cognate to Ancient Greek σβέννυμι (sbénnumi, to quench).(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
