Derived from Latin syncretismus, from Ancient Greek συγκρητισμός (sunkrētismós), from συγκρητίζειν (sunkrētízein, unite against a third party), from σύν (sún, together) + Κρής (Krḗs, Cretan), originally with reference to ancient Cretan communities.
