Inherited from Old Swedish skatfrir, equivalent to skatt (tax) +‎ -e- +‎ -fri (free).

Usage notes[edit]

Tax-free in the general sense. For tax-free shops, goods, etc., at international airports and vessels and the like, English taxfree is used as a loan.
