Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse skip (ship), from Proto-Germanic *skipą. Cognate with English ship and German Schiff.

The meaning "nave" is influenced by German Schiff, which is a loan translation of Medieval Latin navis (ship, nave). It have arisen through a confusion of two Greek words: ναῦς (naûs, ship) and ναός (naós, temple, nave)
