Etymology[edit]
Cognate with Russian смага (smaga, “heat”), Serbo-Croatian смаг/smag, смагнути/smagnuti (“to pine away”). Non-Slavic cognates include German schmauchen (“to puff away”), English smoke, Armenian մուխ (mux, “smoke”). The relation to Russian смуглый (smuglyj), Sanskrit समा (samā) (and German Sommer) is unclear.
