Etymology[edit]

From Middle Low German sniddeker, derived from the verb sniddeken, snidken (to carve), a variant of the verb snīden (to cut), from Proto-Germanic *snīþaną. Norwegian snekker and Swedish snickare are also borrowed from Low German.
