• Zinkevičius compares the word to Latvian spilšs (“clear, pure, bright”).
• Alternatively, from Proto-Baltic [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pelh- (“to split, separate, sever”). Compare Latvian spal̃va (“feather, hair, quill”), spilva (“cottongrass, little hair-like growths”), and Lithuanian spalvà (“color”) with further semantic development.
