From Middle English stee, ste, sty, stie, sti, stegh, stiȝe (ladder), from Old Norse stegi, stigi (ladder, step, steep ascent), from Proto-Germanic *stigiz (an ascent, climb). Cognate with Old English stiġe (ascent or descent), German Stiege (staircase). See stair, sty, stile.
