Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle Dutch steech, stege, from Old Dutch steyga, *stega (stairway), from Proto-Germanic *stigǭ (staircase; ladder). Cognate with Middle Low German stēge, Old High German stega. More distantly related to Old High German steiga (from Proto-Germanic *staigō-) and German Steg (from Proto-Germanic *stiga-).
