Aromanian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly ultimately from Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stériphos). Alternatively, it may be derived from Vulgar Latin *exstirpus or *extirpus, from Latin extirpo (I root out)

Compare Romanian sterp, Albanian shterp, shterpë, probably from the same source, and Venetian sterpa, Friulian sterpe.

Adjective[edit]

sterpu m (plural sterchi, feminine equivalent stearpã, feminine plural stearpi or stearpe)

  1. barren, lifeless, desolate
  2. sterile, infertile
