From Middle Dutch struuf, from Old Dutch *strūf, from Proto-Germanic *strūbaz (stiff, rough, bristly, shaggy), from Proto-Indo-European *strewbʰ-, *strewb- (stiff). Cognate with Middle Low German struuf, West Frisian stroef, German straub and struppig.
