Etymology[edit]

Either formed as an abstraction from the Swedish verb svälla, or borrowed from German Schwall (or Middle High German swal). Doublet of svullnad and svulst.

Usage notes[edit]

Used both to concretely describe sudden movements of bodies of water, as well as more abstractly (for example to describe emotions).
