Inherited from Proto-Slavic *svekrъ (Russian свёкор (svjókor), Czech svekr), Lithuanian šešuras, from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros (Latin socer, Ancient Greek ἑκυρός (hekurós), Albanian vjehërr, Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), Armenian սկեսուր (skesur), Old English sweor).
