Perhaps borrowed from Middle High German spaz, spatze, from Old High German sparo, from Proto-Germanic *sparwô, from *sparwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *sper(w)-, *sper(g)-. Cognate with Russian шпак (špak), Ukrainian шпак (špak), Belarusian шпак (špak), Czech špaček.
