From Old Norse þǫrf (“need”), from Proto-Norse *ᚦᚨᚱᛒᚢ (*þarbu), from Proto-Germanic *þarbō. Cognate with Old English þearf, Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐍂𐌱𐌰 (þarba) and Icelandic þörf.
