Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish تومان (ten thousand; a division), cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰇𐰢𐰤 (t²ümn², ten thousand), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tümen (ten thousand). Compare Mongolian түм (tüm) and Azerbaijani tümən.
