Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *s-maː (flea), from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Malieng samaː¹, Proto-Bahnaric *cmaː (flea) (whence Sedang hơmá), Mang taː²maː⁴, Khmu [Cuang] tmaʔ.

The first element is one of the cases where the presyllable was preserved.
