Etymology[edit]

taakse (behind) and poistu (command to run ten paces); first part gives the direction, second part specifies the action.

Interjection[edit]

taakse poistu

  1. (military, Finland) Command for soldiers to do an about-face, run 10 paces, stop, turn back around to face the person who issued the command, and stand at ease.

Usage notes[edit]

  • There is typically a short pause between the preparatory command taakse and the command of action poistu.
  • Sometimes issued repeatedly in quick succession as a light disciplinary measure, see poistuttaa.
