Compound of telepon (“phone”) + genggam (“handheld”). Compare with Japanese 携帯電話 (keitaidenwa, “mobile phone”, literally “handheld telephone”), Korean 휴대전화 (hyudaejeonhwa, “mobile phone”, literally “handheld telephone”).
