Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from (carbon) and (gas). The Chinese character (thán) is composed of (thạch, rock, chemical radical for "non-gassy" nonmetal elements) + (thán, coal), due to the carbonic makeup of coal. See also than đá (coal) and Than Đá (Carboniferous) which are from Chinese 石炭 (thạch thán, literally rocky coal). Compare Chinese 炭氣炭气 (thán khí).
