From Medieval Latin or Late Latin theodiscus, from Proto-Germanic *þiudiskaz (of the people, popular, vernacular), from *þeudō (people) + *-iskaz (-ish, -ic, -al). Compare Italian tedesco, Venetian todesco, French thiois.
