Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish þvā, from Old Norse þvá, from Proto-Germanic *þwahaną. The stem tvag- has been restored from the past participle and supine of två; tvagen and tvagit respectively. Compare slå with past participle/supine slagen/slagit.
