From Proto-Germanic *unhtwǭ. Cognate with Old Saxon ūhta, Old High German ūhta, regional German Uchte (“midnight mass”), Old Norse ótta, Norwegian Bokmål otte, and as the enhanced form Dutch ochtend (“morning”).
