Lithuanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Latvian ods, from Proto-Baltic *uodas.[1] Further etymology uncertain, but it may be linked with either Proto-Indo-European *h₃ed- (to bite) or an o-grade of *h₁ed- (to eat). Alternatively, may be cognate with Slavic words for “gadfly” (Czech ovád, Polish owad, Serbo-Croatian ȍbād / о̏ба̄д, Slovene obàd), but these may be from a Slavic formation *ob-vadъ rather than older Balto-Slavic.[2]
