Inherited from Old Czech víti, from Proto-Slavic *vī́tī, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y-. Cognate with Polish wić, Russian вить (vitʹ), Serbo-Croatian vȉti.
