From vāci (“Germans”) + -ietis. Cognates include Lithuanian vókietis.

vācietis m (2nd declension, feminine form: vāciete)
- a (male) German, a man from Germany

- (genitive plural; rare, usually vācu): German, pertaining to Germans or Germany and its people

Usage notes[edit]
Vāciešis is the preferred term for “Germans”; vāci is possible but much less frequent. In the genitive, when used adjectivally, however, vācu is the preferred form. In particular, only vācu valoda (“German language”) is possible.
