Finnish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
vaaksiainen (“crane fly, daddy longlegs”) + hämähäkki (“spider”), thus named due to their long legs resembling those of crane flies
Pronunciation[edit]
- IPA(key): /ˈʋɑːksiɑi̯sˌhæmæhækːi/, [ˈʋɑ̝ːks̠iɑ̝i̯s̠ˌhæmæˌhækːi]
- Rhymes: -ækːi
- Syllabification(key): vaak‧si‧ais‧hä‧mä‧häk‧ki
Noun[edit]
vaaksiaishämähäkki
- pholcid (spider of the family Pholcidae, consisting of about 1,800 species in almost 100 genera, characterized by eceptionally long legs)
- daddy long-legs spider, long-bodied cellar spider, Pholcus phalangioides (one of the species in the family, recently introduced in Finland)
Usage notes[edit]
- Pholcus phalangioides is sometimes referred to as kellarihämähäkki which appears to be a verbatim translation from cellar spider, one of the common names used of pholcids.
