Estonian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *vaidëldak, from Proto-Baltic. Irregular stem vaiel- in forms like the da-infinitive result from regular phonological developments: *vaitelema*vaitlemavaidlema, but *vaiðelðakvaielda (-da is an analogical form). Compare Latvian vaids (problem) and Lithuanian vaidas (argument, quarrel). Cognate to´dialectal Finnish vaidella (to ask, to want) and Northern Sami váidit (to complain).

Verb[edit]
